Ubuntu on a Mac

Without a dedicated Ubuntu workstation, I am using a MacBook Pro with VMware to do most of the serious development. I finally figured out the keyboard mapping (and I would like to keep them handy for future use). The mapping can be set in "System settings" -> "Keyboard Layout Options".

- Open "Alt/Win key behaviour" enable "Ctrl key is mapped to Win Keys"
- Open "Ctrl Key position" enable "Left Ctrl as Meta"

Drupal code snippets in wysiwyg editor

After searching for a way to do code snippets in wysiwyg/tinymce, I had to go for wysiwyg/ckeditor/geshi. The ckeditor had to be 3.x (4+ would not work with wysiwyg).

The Drupal modules needed:

The dev version of wysiwyg: http://drupal.org/project/Wysiwyg

The geshi filter module: http://drupal.org/project/geshifilter

The wysiwyg button: http://drupal.org/project/wysiwyg_geshi_button

Suckerfish CSS Drop Down Menus in Drupal

Dropdown menus in Drupal the way I do it. By using the menu_block I am more flexible in how to display the menu. By using block_class I can reuse the css code without having to worry about the id drupal generates for the block.

Step 1. Install menu_block and block_class.

Step 2. Goto /admin/blocks and create a menu_block item with expanded children, a block classname "menublockmainmenu" and place where you like.

Step 3. Add css code.

PHP Benelux 2013 in Antwerpen

My third visit to the PHP Benelux conference and it's always done way too soon.

I still have to work through the notes I made. A great conference!

Zend Framework dip

For a couple of days I was wondering if ZF2 wasn't needlessly over complicated. I read a quote from someone asking Matthew Weier O'Phinney if he thought Zend Framework 2 was over engineerd (Matthew's answer: No!).

So I started listing what I wanted in a framework and it did not take long for me to realise that ZF2 had all of that.

The feature I missed in ZF were customizable routes, this is a great feature. The rest might take some getting used to.

ZF2 first glance

Well, today it had to be done... digging into ZF2. It's nice to see the 5.3.x namespaces being used, I have not dared to use them myself, but ZF2 will give me the push I need. The zf commandline tool is something that will be missed. The tutorial for ZF2 is finished, that is a nice stepping stone to get going: http://zf2.readthedocs.org/en/release-2.0.2/index.html.

ZF2 will replace ZF1 as my starting point for web applications from now on.

Programmatically add node translation

When I was trying to add a node translation, it took me a moment to find out the the tnid of the node has to be equal to its nid. By writing about it here I hope others won't have to search as long and far as I did ;).

Drupal Module jumpstart

I'm putting together my own little module-jumpstart-list. These are modules I like to include right after an install (they might not all get enabled).
